Do not do much birding and keeping bird lists these days so it always nice to pick up an unexpected "year" bird. Was at the Washington Food Market in Washington Depot, CT late this morning to pick up a Sunday newspaper.  A young women at one the registers noted some bird activity in the median of the parking area for the market. I turned around to note a Common Raven had flown down to pick up something in the median. The Raven flew off quickly followed by at least 2 American Crows who were not " happy" with the Raven being there.

Hi all,
This is just a quick notice that I have scheduled more bird walks at CT Audubon’s Milford Coastal Center for April. Please join me in exploring this vital Important Bird Area this spring.

Also, the Coastal Center will be bringing back the Return of the Osprey fundraising event on April 25. It will be a great evening of food, fun, and terrific raffle/auction items.

We invite you to join us in celebrating the life of Jim Hunter on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at 6:00 PM at Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven. Together, we’ll take a walk, share stories, and honor a truly brilliant biologist, naturalist, birder, and friend.
Jim touched so many lives through his knowledge, curiosity, and deep love of the natural world, and it feels only right to gather outside, where he felt most at home.
Please come as you are and bring memories and a story to share. Please note that the park closes at dusk and there is plenty of parking. We hope to see you there.

5+ years ago bears took out our bird feeders. We put up a clothesline
(made by the Amish-very durable—not your mom’s clothesline). We were able
to attach it to our back deck and out to a large tree. We haven’t had
bears since, and have been able to feed the birds year round.

There is a pond on Knotter Drive in the Cheshire industrial park that has been hosting a good selection of ducks recently including Buffleheads, Northern Shovelers, Ring Necked ducks and Common and Hooded Mergansers. The road frontage was recently cleared with good viewing. There is a curb so it is hard to pull off; there is a nearby driveway that might be easier (I accessed via bike).

Checked out Utley Marsh this morning with a few other birders and the sandhill cranes apparently have left. Lots of wood ducks, black ducks, hooded Merganser, a few green winged teal, and a lonely ring-necked duck in the marsh.
Interestingly, on my way to the Rec park, I came across a ring-necked pheasant running alongside Route 66 Near West Rd. in Columbia. First one I’ve seen in a while since I moved away from the Bristol Fish and Game area where they stocked probably hundreds every year.

If anyone is considering going to Mill Pond in Broad Brook the parking lot as of today is a complete mess from cars going through the mud. I had to park at the extreme right side.

Subject: [CT Birds] Remembering Jim Hunter
I am so sorry to learn that Jim Hunter has passed away.

The story my mother tells is that, when we first moved from the city, she
looked outside to see my older brother playing in the gravel driveway,
because he was scared to play in the grass. She whisked us off to the
nearby nature center in Westport. This was such good luck - the three of us
kids would go on to spend our young lives learning from Jim.

Jim taught me how to listen for a bird song, and feed a vulture, and dust
off a Passenger Pigeon, and catch a frog, and say the word *trichoptera*.
He taught me that it is cool and good and right to know things. He was the
first person I ever saw ask a real question about biology. Jim at the
chalkboard: *what does it mean*, for example,* to say that something is
alive?* A moment ago I said that Jim had passed away. I know about humans
and animals and the earth and our place in it; I wonder if he'd prefer me
to say he's dead. I know he would have liked me asking the question.

I've had a miraculous number of miraculously good teachers in my life. The
one I emulate the most is Jim Hunter. In 2024, I dedicated my PhD thesis to
Jim and Grit. My family and I will miss him terribly.

And…
If you walk across the 14 Acre parking lot to Riccis Pond, along with the Drake Northern Pintail, there’s also a Drake Northern Shoveler and a Black Duck.

Three days ago, that pond also had Common Mergansers. But they weren’t there today.

The third up-stream troupe is now heading past as I write, 80 or so. None appear to be feeding, just chillin’. Hard to suggest an accurate count!

I had the opposite experience once. I was birding along the embankment of a coastal marshland when I looked into a bush and saw a small grey body with two eyes looking directly at me. For a split-second I thought "Cat" - then the 'cat' leapt out of the bush to spread its long wings and show the white rump of a harrier! (Since this was in England, strictly a 'Hen Harrier').

Subject: [CT Birds] a Classy mis-ID
Birds belong to the taxonomic Class Aves, which means they are not, among
other things, Insects or Spiders, Reptiles or Amphibians, or us. I wasn't
thinking about taxonomy recently while driving slowly and alertly through
one of my favorite roads in rural Watertown, I hit the brakes when, out of
the corner of my eye, I saw a silhouetted head with well-spaced erect ear
tufts. Immediately flashing through my mind: Great Horned Owl looking
right at me.

As I reached for binoculars I also quickly focused mentally and visually at
a bulky body at modest height in a rather nearby tree, and saw the head
looking at me was

BOBCAT!

Usually I manage to get IDs at least into the right taxonomic Class.

Subject: [CT Birds] Orange backyard feeders
3/9 Orange. In addition to my regular avian visitors (titmouse,
chickadee, common grackles, blue jays, cardinals, starlings, juncos, white
throated and song sparrows) I have had a flock of Red winged blackbirds .
Being that the last 2 days have been above 50F, the honey bees are out in
full force.
They were buzzing in and around my mixed seed feeder, emptying it today.
Lots of loud buzzing, and they were inside the feeder ( apparently eating
the "powder" from the seeds) and lots of seeds on the ground now, so the
bees are on the ground as well. I attached a short video on my E-bird
report.

From: Folsom-O'Keefe, Corrie via CTBirds <ctbirds...>
Subject: [CT Birds] Adaptive Management at Great Meadows Unit of Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) during Early Spring 2026
Dear CT Birding Community,
Since the completion of the 44-acre wetland restoration project in 2022 at the Great Meadows Unit, the CT DEEP Wetland Habitat and Mosquito Management (WHAMM) Program has been monitoring the area for mosquitoes in its continuing agreement with the United States Fish and Wildilfe Service (USFWS).
Often during a large-scale restoration effort, depressional areas can form. Areas where water gets trapped can produce large numbers of saltmarsh mosquitoes. To achieve restoration goals set by USFWS, NOAA, CT DEEP, Audubon and other stakeholders, the WHAMM Program has been allowed to fine tune elevations in the restoration zone to eliminate mosquito-breeding depressions.
Using a wide-track, low-ground pressure excavator, high areas can be regraded to release trapped water, channels can be excavated to enhance tidal flushing, or shallow pools can be constructed to create habitat for marsh fishes that eat mosquito larvae. This strategy of source reduction and biological control has been the foundation of the WHAMM Program's Integrated Marsh Management program since the mid-1980's.
This "adaptive management" approach was used in 2022. Since then, the marsh has been settling, and the new tidal hydrology is creating pathways for water to enter the marsh and become trapped. In 2025, other areas were found to be producing mosquitoes in large numbers. Further work to eliminate these new sites is proposed for early Spring 2026 prior to the nesting season for Saltmarsh Sparrows, Willets and other birds of concern. Once on site, work should be completed within a week depending on weather and tides. The area will continue to be monitored throughout 2026 to gauge efficacy and to continue to identify any new areas that may emerge.
Note: Thank you for your comments on plans to connect the large brackish pond at the Great Meadows Unit to an adjacent tidal creek. We have paused that work to allow time to share information about the overarching project, the reasons for the planned work, and to collect additional input. Project partners plan to hold an information session later this year. Updates and additional information on these plans will be available at: https://www.fws.gov/refuge/stewart-b-mckinney.

First of year anyway here over my property - fully-feathered Turkey Vulture circling around.  The local Red-tailed Hawk has just joined it, a much smaller bird.  Very few birds at feeders today.  Last night, Barred Owl heard calling, first time since late Fall.  And Chipmunks are chasing each other over the snow - they've also been house-cleaning - I've seen leaves and pine needles shooting out of the snow!  Life is stirring!

Not seen any in "my patch" in New Milford since January and early February, when huge mixed flocks of blackbirds (80-100) descended several times on my feeders - mostly grackles, very few red-winged blackbirds, plus cowbirds and starlings.  One lone gloriously iridescent male grackle last week - definitely an outlier.  Shall check two local swamps today.

Absolutely, Min!! Count Avalonia in! We have a new Preserve in Bozrah/Montville that reportedly has a nice population of them!! Was really nice to substantiate EWPWs on the pending Montville acquisition this past year!!

Hi All,

With spring on our doorstep I figured I would reach out to see whether anyone would be interested in joining an annual monitoring project.  We conduct 25 State woodcock routes across the landscape every year.  These routes serve as an index to woodcock populations in our two Focus Areas and in the State as a whole.  The commitment is one survey per year.  I currently have two unfilled surveys in Litchfield and Thomaston, and one in Chaplin.  We have been running these surveys for over 20 years now and they have proven to be a very good index.

If anyone is interested, please reach out.  <Min.huang...>

This morning a Fox Sparrow (very red), a yellow-bellied Sapsucker, a wave of 35+ juncos (they are singing!) and yesterday 5 robins. Also a male Hooded Merganser checked out my little stream as it does every March. The locals are singing and calling like they know there’s change a-coming as the days grow longer. And a chipmunk showed itself up through the foot of snow!
