Ten birders from Three Rivers Birding gathered at Chain O' Lakes yesterday morning, in hopes of adding some new birds to our yearly lists. The weather was perfect for birding, with very little wind, and a cool morning that warmed up nicely throughout the day. The woods weren't crawling with warblers, (except for the Yellow Warblers) but we always had at least a few good birds calling, and we ran into several nice pockets of birds that kept us all busy trying to sort them all out. We ended up with a nice list of 62 birds for the day, including thirteen warbler species. As a special bonus, we were also treated to a Beaver swimming directly under our feet as we stood on one of the park's footbridges! Trip Leader: John Winebrenner

The May 11th bird walk at Ft. Harrison State Park, Indianapolis, produced 66 species. Migrant numbers were low but we did well with breeding species and had great looks at Cerulean Warbler, Indigo Bunting, and multiple Scarlet Tanagers and Baltimore Orioles. The complete list is below.
There will be two more Sunday morning bird walks in May at Ft. Harrison on May 18 and May 25. Meet at 8am in the NE corner of the Delaware Lake parking lot.

Well the big Day was a good one. It took a while, almost 5 hours, but I did see 60 species. Notable misses could have put the tally higher. This is the first May count I did not have a Sandpiper-the spillway usually produces a Spotted and frequently a Solitary. Usually I see more raptors. And not spending time aroud the feeders cut my Woodpecker count. All the same a good day birding

As a scouting mission for tomorrow's field trip, Lisa and I camped for a couple nights at Chain O' Lakes earlier this week. Though it rained most of Monday night and Tuesday morning, we were happy to see that Spring migration is in full swing! Our full list of birds during our stay was 68 species, including sixteen species of Warblers! On Tuesday alone, we found 61 species, with another 51 species Wednesday morning before packing up to head back home. The foliage is already starting to get dense, so a lot of our birding was by ear. It was also really nice to hear a pair of Barred Owls calling as we were sitting at our campsite!

Date: 5/5/25 5:40 pm From: Greene, Terri B <tgreene...> Subject: [IN-BIRD-L] Yard birds and Bryan Park (Monroe and Lawrence Counties)
It’s nice to see and hear the Chimney Swifts overhead again. The Great Crested Flycatcher was back (April 24). And, I was delighted when a pair (male, female) of Rose-breasted Grosbeaks showed up at my feeders on April 30. I haven’t seen the male since then, but the female has been coming back, sometimes bringing a few friends along (4 females total on May 1). A Warbling Vireo made its musical debut in the backyard on April 23. I’ve been hearing warblers at Bryan Park . . . and at Jack’s house in northern Lawrence County. Oh, and it’s always fun to hear/see the gnatcatchers!
Dog Elliot pointed out a Hermit Thrush in the backyard to me early morning on April 19. Later that day, his gaze out the back door directed me to see my first catbird of the season at the suet feeder. Elliot’s interest in birds, however, earned him a scolding at Bryan Park today. He was investigating something beneath the branches of a large spruce tree. When I heard a sound, I quickly pulled Elliot back. At the same time, two thrashers—ready for battle—came down toward us. I suspect the sound I heard was a frightened, young thrasher. Elliot and I quickly departed so not to disturb them further.
Birds listed below were seen and/or heard at my home unless otherwise noted.

Hello everyone,
I am giving a FREE, public, all-ages presentation in Olney, Illinois in Richland County near southwest Indiana next Thursday, May 1 about the Great Horned Owls I have been studying for 19 years in Forest Park; a large urban park in St. Louis, Missouri. This talk will cover how I found the owls, basic facts about the species and I will share many photos and videos shot by me to illustrate the amazing behaviors of these beautiful owls. My talks are energetic, engaging, entertaining and educational. I hope to see you there-thank you!

The bird walk at Ft. Harrison State Park, Indianapolis turned up 67 species on April 27th. Highlights included GREEN HERON, OSPREY, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, PURPLE FINCH, ORCHARD ORIOLE, and 13 warbler species during the walk, including ORANGE-CROWNED, CERULEAN and PRAIRIE, and a GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, seen shortly before the walk began to make 14 species in total.
A male Orange-crowned Warbler that has lingered for multiple days was cooperative with everyone getting good views. Other bird providing particularly good views included an adult Broad-winged Hawk, Osprey, and Green Heron. Conversely, a number of species were heard-only. The complete list is below.
There will be a bird walk each Sunday in May at Ft. Harrison. Meet at 8am in the NE corner of Delaware Lake parking lot.

I just want to report to everyone that I had my first hummingbird in Muncie yesterday. It’s at least a week earlier than ever before.

Three Rivers Birding conducted its second field trip to Hurshtown Reservoir today, April 13, with seven birders attending. A mostly routine trip was enlivened by a discussion about the identity of one duck. We eventually concluded that it was a Black Scoter, rarely seen in Indiana away from the Lakefront
