We need to publicize the info on the next public hearing before the
Planning Commission, and plan to show up in force - seriously, in bird
"costume" or with little signs stating the facts. It could be a way to make
the Commission pay attention and give credence to our concerns, without
"taking the floor". Peaceful but determined individuals in a group are much
harder to forget and ignore when decisions are being made and votes casted.
Send out the date as soon as it's known, so we can plan to show up.
Thank you, Kiki, and Gordon.

and SPBA article by Kiki Sonnen SPBA President about preventing glass bird
strikes in development of St Paul downtown waterfront. The provision was
removed from plan by City staff. Bird strikes kill 1 billion birds a year
in US. New buildings with public funding in MN should meet "green" criteria
that include prevention of killing of birds--- the counter example is what
happened in construction of the US Bank stadium.
Over 1000 birds were killed in one night in downtown Chicago a few years
ago. The glass building (McCormick Place Lakeside Center) has since been
retrofitted to bird-safe the glass. For four decades volunteers had picked
up dead birds at this building during spring and fall migrations.

*Bird’s Eye View - Kiki Sonnen*
Protect Our Birds:
Stop Window Collisions
Protecting the Mississippi River's natural, cultural and scenic resources
was prioritized in the 1970's.
Then Governor Wendell Anderson thru Executive order and soon after the
State Legislature created the Mississippi River Corridor Critical Area
(MRCCA), which required localities in the metropolitan area to create
coordinated land planning and zoning regulations. In 2017 new MRCCA rules
required the localities to update and adopt new zoning provisions.
Environmental groups, neighborhood district councils, and civic groups see
this as an opportunity to improve bird safety measures along the
Mississippi Flyway. We now know that a billion birds in the United States
alone are killed by window strikes each year. We also know that habitat
loss, collapse of the insect population, and climate change have a deep
negative effect on our birds. Simple building and zoning design changes can
reduce window collisions by 95% The birds need our help now.
Four years ago at the public hearing, the St Paul Planning Commission heard
our pleas for bird safe glass, bird safe lighting, improved landscaping,
tiered building heights and clear setback rules for new development. The
Commission directed zoning staff to draft the language for those measures.
The staff wrote the new language, but city administrators left the matter
sit for four years. Finally, the matter was returned to the Planning
Commission. But all the bird safe measures have been stricken!
Again neighbors, environmental groups, bird advocates and concerned
community members testified before the Planning Commission on May 2, 2025.
We repeated our concerns and our desire to have bird safety measures
returned to the zoning ordinance. The issue will soon be heard at a public
hearing before the City Council maybe mid-August or September.
You can help the birds by contacting the *Mayor

Tell them you want bird-safe glass returned to the MRCCA zoning ordinance.
Let them know some facts about the issue:
-
The cost of bird safe glass is less than 1% of total new construction
costs.
-
State law requires bird safe glass in all projects using state bonding
funds.
-
Bird safe zoning ordinances are working throughout North America
including Berkeley CA, Toronto, Madison WI, Middleton WI, Minneapolis (new
skyways), Mountain View CA, New York, Portland ME, Sacramento, Seattle,
Washington DC, and more.
-
Bird safe glass is already installed in these local buildings: Allianz
Field (glass doors), Bell Museum, Hamline-Midway Library, Higher Ground St.
Paul Shelter (Catholic Charities), Macalester College–Janet Wallace Fine
Arts Center, Theater and Dance Building, Minnesota National Wildlife
Visitor Center, North End Community Center, Playwrights’ Center, UMN Bee
and Pollinator Research Lab.
-
Bird safe glass is also slated for these planned buildings: Mississippi
River Learning Center, The Park at Riversedge, Wakan Tipi Center
-

Calling all volunteers! MOU is in need of a few more volunteers for our booth at the State Fair, August 21-September 1. This is our annual "Ask Us About Birds" booth. Sign up using the link below to help staff the booth and answer questions about birds, bird watching, and all manner of bird-related topics. You don't have to be an expert in bird identification, just have a passion for birds and be willing to help. The MOU booth at the State Fair is a great opportunity to meet fellow birders and to share with others your love of birds.
You can view available shifts and sign up at the link here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0E4BACAB28A3FAC16-55596494-2025#/

July 20: Carpenter Nature Center (Hastings)
The MOU is pleased to partner on a special dragonflies and birds field trip with Jeff Fischer, Master Naturalist and board member of the Minnesota Dragonfly Society with extensive birding experience. This is a superb opportunity to learn about the natural history and identification of dragonflies from a local expert. Along with Jeff, Matt Hoberg will lead this trip on behalf of the MOU.
This is an excellent birding location and participants will also see plenty of birds!

Date: 7/7/25 2:01 pm From: Paul Budde <buddep...> Subject: [mou-net] Yesterday's event on mou-net |
Yesterday in the mid-afternoon someone (probably a bot) managed to sign up for the MOU website and then start sending emails repeatedly with little or no content. We lost count after 100. This "bot" also managed to create over 1000 RQDs. They, too, had no content of interest. All the strange phrases you saw in those emails were also in one or more fields of the RQDs.
To address these issues, we
1. turned off the ability to send an email to the listserv from the button in the upper right corner of the MOU home page; 2. added the email address "<mou...>" to the list of moderated emails, meaning this email address cannot send an email to the entire listserv; and 3. deleted the most recently added user to the MOU website (user = "NQSJMUIn") which was almost certainly the source of the problems.
Doing (1) didn't stop the onslaught, but we plan to keep this facility inoperative as that might have enabled the bot to create the user account. Actions (2) and (3) seemed to immediately stop the emails. We'll leave <mou...> moderated until it seems safe to change it -- though with (1) turned off we can't imagine this email account would ever need to send a message to the group. We will also investigate ways to have better control over which user accounts can be created.
The event seems to be past us, as we haven't had any of these emails since yesterday early evening and no new RQDs have been created. We apologize for the annoyance it caused all of you (us).

The restoration of the MOU database is complete. We had to use a copy from
27 June 2025, so any work you might have done after that date through
yesterday ~Noon might be lost. HOWEVER, before we did the restore I grabbed
all new records between 26 June and yesterday, and I was able to upload
those into the restored database this morning. So, I don't think any data
was lost. What I'm not sure about is if someone uploaded a photo or audio
to support an ID between 27 June and 5 July. That media should not be lost,
but I'm not sure if it is still associated with the original record.
Please let me know if you find any problems.

We need to do a restore of the MOU data tables, which should happen in the
next few days. In the meantime, you can continue to use the MOU website,
but know that any changes you make to the database -- sightings, ebird data
uploads, or photos added, for example -- will be lost. So, please hold off
on adding or modifying the data for a few days. We'll let you know when
the restored database is available, hopefully early next week.

Jack,
I live in the heart of bear country (Isabella) and have been struggling with bears/feeders for years. The only things I've found that work for feeders are 1) taking in the feeder at night, 2) putting the feeder higher than the bear can reach on a pole it can't climb. For the last year we've been dealing with a 400+ pound male, which has been challenging. I put a large platform feeder on a solid 4"x4" post 8' high. It couldn't reach it but he stood on his hind legs and rocked the post back-and-forth with such force he snapped it off at ground level. I'm in the process of replacing it with a 5"x6" post. A disadvantage of this approach is the need for a stepladder to service it. And forget a hanging feeder if the pull rope is at a level the bear can reach. They'll figure it out, skip the feeder and yank on the rope/cable till all the seed is shaken out or it's pulled to the ground. I don't have a suggestion for nest boxes except for height, but I imagine people aren't going to want to haul a stepladder around for that or go to the time and expense of a telescoping pole.

(Posted by Jack Hauser <jgshauser...> via moumn.org)
Greetings,
In the Spring edition of BBRP Newsletter, I recently read that Jean Olsen of Pine County lost
109 eggs/chicks from black bear attacks, during the 2024 nesting season.
Because bears have such a keen sense of smell and Bluebirds cannot smell, I thought maybe some form of skunk oil would deter them.
Does anyone have experience on how to deter black bears from bird feeders& nesting boxes?
Cruising the web for answers, I found "Repels-All" and Pepper Spray.
Has anyone had experience with any of these products?
Reading more closely I found that Repels-All did not include Black bears.
Jack

Date: 6/27/25 12:12 pm From: Natasha Bartolotta <natasha...> Subject: [mou-net] Loon Surveyors needed in Le Sueur County |
Hello all,
The National Loon Center is looking for anyone residing in Le Sueur county with knowledge of local loon sightings and who may be interested in a potential July survey of select lakes. If you are interested, please reach out to me at: <natasha...>
More information below:
With our scientific advisory council, we are conducting resighting work in southern MN lakes where a "Restore the Call" project translocated young loons about 10 years ago. We are looking to survey lakes within about a 15km radius of the release lake, Fish Lake, in Le Sueur County.
We've been looking at MOU records and eBird sightings in this area and have identified lakes within La Sueur, Waseca, Blue Earth, and Rice counties that fall within that 15km radius. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or are interested in a possible survey date later this summer.
Thank you! Natasha --
