Interesting morning at Lake Jocelyn. I met up with John Callender there and we had some unexpected birds. There was a good swallow show, but no Bank Swallow and no Swifts either. In the case of the Swifts, I think the fact that it was clear, rather than overcast may have contributed their absence this morning.
Probably the most unexpected bird we had was a single male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK that flew by us on the east, heading rapidly southwest into Carpinteria. I have no idea where it might have ended up, but Bates Road might be worth a look. John got photos.
We also had a very active Yellow-breasted Chat, seen and heard first in the brush on the hillside above the lake; then in the weedy growth along the far end of the lake. Again, John got some good photos and an audio recording. Other birds of note were 3 male Yellow-headed Blackbirds that perched in the dead reeds near the far end of the lake; a Western Tanager that flew into the dead tree near the end of the drive; male and female Hooded Oriole, and John thought he heard a Lazuli Bunting, though we could not get on the bird.
Ring-necked Ducks and one Spotted Sandpiper remain; there also were two different broods of Mallard Ducklings in evidence.
