Subject: Spring Migration
Jaye and I spent two hours on Ft Riley at the Pet Cemetery Trail (aka Moon
Lake Hiking Trail - Geary County) this morning and had 10 warbler species.
Not great by eastern Kansas standards but a good day on the west side of
the Flint Hills. Merlin claimed a Bay-breasted Warbler but we never saw or
heard it. We did get wonderful looks at a Blackburninan Warbler though!
Four things I noticed this morning: The morning chorus was devoid of
Harris's Sparrows which was not a surprise; Tennessee Warblers were
everywhere; Eastern Wood-Pewees are back and singing; Yellow-billed
Cuckoos were back and singing. These four things combined indicate that
we are on the downhill side of spring migration (aka, Birder's Christmas.)
Sigh.......

Chuck
