Today 17 birders participated in the Sioux Falls Bird Club's monthly field trip to Newton Hills State Park. We enjoyed a warm but nice walk on the C and D trails from the horse camp, and were happy to find a Hooded Warbler again for the seventh year in a row at the park. We also got great views of a Blue-winged Warbler, and 11 other warbler species. Many Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and Gray Catbirds were singing, as were Indigo Buntings and Eastern Towhees. We didn't see as many woodpeckers as we sometimes do, but we did observe a Red-headed Woodpecker and Northern Flicker setting up nests in the same snag about two feet apart from each other, so that was interesting.
Lake Lakota surprisingly had some water in it, which held some American White Pelicans and a few shorebirds. Harmodon Park back in southeast Sioux Falls was loaded with shorebirds as the drought has created quite a mudflat there. Mainly Pectoral Sandpipers, but also Hudonsian and Marbled Godwits, Dunlin, Stilt Sandpiper, Semipalmated Plovers, and others. A Black Tern was also there.
All in all, a great outing with 95 species by my sometimes-poor math. Thanks to all who attended!
Our next club outing will be Saturday, June 7.
