*Cachuma Lake, east end *
Birding along Highway is always exciting. Today was no different, but there were some good birds. A pair of *Green-winged Teal* stuck together. This is quite late for them to be here. Interesting that it's a tightly bound pair. This is not one of our 5 species of ducks that are expected to breed, or one of the 5 other species that have bred in SB County. So, it will be good to keep an eye on this pair. Two *Snowy Egrets* were also present. This species is common along the coast, but not in the SY Valley. A scope is needed to bird here.
Good birding is available along *the road to Live Oak Camp*. Equestrians only are allowed in Live Oak Camp and the trails on the north side of the river, but the 0.7 miles of road from Hwy 154 to the Live Oak Camp entrance is a really pleasant bird. Little to no traffic, easy walking, and nice habitats (though the creek is dry). This is Hot Springs Creek. Rancho San Marcos Golf Course borders the road on the east side. Park shortly after turning off of Hwy 154. Two *Yellow-breasted Chats* were singing here on 8 May.
