Observation start time: 09:15:00 Observation end time: 14:00:00 Total observation time: 4.75 hours
Official Counter: Michael Ceci
Observers: John Antonevich, Keith Stock
Visitors: Keith Stock and John Antonevich helped with the watch between 11:30 - 2:00. Thank you, guys! Without your help, we would have probably missed some of the flight.
Weather: Along the south shore of Lake Erie, and going inland towards the escarpment, it was truly one of the most pleasant days of the 2025 RHW season. Upon arrival @ Site # 1, NNE wind gusts held @ 2.2 mph. However, the north element in the wind was significant enough to push the birds over to Rt 20 and upwards at the escarpment. We were treated to a magnificent look at Canada's shoreline and various boating activities on the Lake. It's days, such as these, that one may appreciate the beauty that surrounds us at the Ripley Hawk Watch sites. I'm amazed that only a handful of observers and visitors take advantage of viewing the unique features of this small corridor that is a major migration highway. Upon the conclusion of the 2025 Season, we intend to reach out to create more awareness of this remarkable feat of nature. In order to continue a full time watch for the 2026 season, it is imperative that we increase our volunteer base. And, shortly, we'll be evaluating this very successful season and develop an action plan to bring more people aboard. Our observer hours and official count increased substantially this season, but there's always room for improvement.
Raptor Observations: At 9:15 AM, there were raptors from Rt 20 upwards at the escarpment. The flight was spread the entire day from the escarpment to Route 5. We had a decent flight of TV's (275) and a good mixture of raptors. We were treated to perfect views of Osprey, Northern Harriers, and Bald Eagles. Special thanks goes to John Antonovich and Keith Stock for their considerable help, especially with the birds spread out and often at the limit of 10X binoculars.
Non-raptor Observations: As a repeat of other recent days, TV's were the proponent bird of the day. The nice mixture of migrating raptors kept things interesting. Throughout the day, local Bald Eagles, Coopers Hawk, and Red-tailed Hawks added to the enjoyment. It was not a busy day for non-raptors.
Predictions: The forecast for Tuesday, 05/13/2025: Considerable cloudiness with occasional rain showers. High around 70F. Winds SE at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of rain 50%. We shouldn't allow the predictions of rain and SE winds discourage us. Some of our best count days for this season occurred when the birds took advantage of the intervals of partial clearing and pushed through. Tomorrow could produce a moderate flight. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Michael Ceci (<michael.ceci541...>) Ripley Hawk Watch information may be found at: www.facebook.com/groups/3193820734258889/
