Last Saturday a few of us met for a field trip down one of the best roads
for Spring birding in western Arkansas. We had a visitor all the way from
Arkadelphia. Bart, it was good to have you.
We had a great morning. Of course migrants were on the move. Everything
slowly heading north. I remember a time when bird numbers were higher.
Before I started birding there were even more. So Saturday it seemed like
it was one of this and one of that. But it was so good seeing those ones.
The two best birds, in my opinion, were the single male Cerulean and the
single male Blackburnian. Both were singing loudly. And they were in
adjacent trees in great lighting. Just wonderful.
We also had an Olive-sided Flycatcher, Magnolia Warbler, Chestnut-sided,
Black-throated Green, American Redstarts, Yellow-throated, Northern Parula,
and so on.
Some of us ran on down to Sharp Chapel after finishing Shepherd Springs.
Best birds there were Bobolinks, a lifer Bell’s Vireo for some, and an
adult Yellow-crowned Night-Heron catching crawdads in the muddy cow pound.
Shorebirds were gone.
It’s almost over. 😩
