I thought it was going to start pouring rain right away because it was so dark and threatening when I left the house but it actually held off until right after I got back early afternoon. There was quite a bit of bird activity at both reserves although the warblers were very hard to see due to the leaves being out and the bright gray sky as background.
Some notable events of the day: FOY Wilson’s at Denison at which I got good looks (male). Then I heard a Kentucky singing and it landed in the trail to forage right in front of me giving incredible views. A couple Veeries were singing—such a wonderful sound. A Barred Owl called briefly. Acadian FCs & Peewees have finally arrived at Denison.
I got to Morris woods relatively late, almost 11, but there was still activity there. I heard a Canada singing softly but it seemed to be staying well hidden but when I looped back, a beautiful male popped up on a low perch and gave me lovely views. I think this may be my first sighting of that species at Morris woods. I’ll have to check my records.
The strangest miss was N Parula which I didn’t hear at either reserve. usually I hear two or three so that was strange but maybe they’re already nesting.
14 warblers at Denison, 11 at Morris Woods (w/some species overlap)—19 species for the morning.
