Hi, birders,

Ten locals scouted the Sierra Vista EOP dikes this morning, finding 63
species. Most areas were quiet, it being mid-summer, but the first signs of
change came in the ducks, sparrows, and blackbirds. The loafing flock of
Mexican Ducks nearly doubled in size this week, with 90 birds counted. 60+
were in one group flushed from an impoundment with open water between ever
taller clumps of cattails.

Yellow-headed Blackbird numbers, too, easily doubled, with groups working
over the sludge piles. Also early were two Savannah Sparrows noted at Moson
Road, one calling and one working the weeds, showing off its strong yellow
lores. Shorebirds were few--two Killdeer and two Spotted Sandpipers.
Long-legged waders were easy to spot--White-face Ibis 15; Black-crowned
Night-Heron 2, Snowy Egret 1, Green Heron 1, and Great Blue Heron 2. A
Peregrine Falcon was working the area, too.

Bird walks behind the locked gates of the Sierra Vista EOP occur every
Sunday morning. For the summer months (June-August) walks start
promptly at *6:00
a.m.* Arrive early at the EOP Bird Viewing Platform to sign in with the
guide--group size is limited to fifteen. Late arrivals will not have access
behind the locked gates. Scopes are useful. Bring a hat and water--there is
no shade nor any amenities on the walk route. There is a chem toilet in the
parking area.

The EOP is located just east (~ 3 miles) of Sierra Vista on AZ Hwy 90. Look
for the Brua Animal Care Center and the Wildlife Viewing signs on the north
side of Hwy 90. Turn left (north) and proceed to the bird viewing platform.
Note that Google Maps may direct you to the wrong entrance.

Cheers, Erika Wilson
