Subject: Sudden passing of Dennis Burnette -- noted birder and butterflier in the Triad area
Fellow naturalists,

I was saddened to hear today of the passing of Dennis Burnette, of
Greensboro; he had passed away on July 16:

He and his late wife Lynn attended numerous Carolina Bird Club meetings,
and he was heavily involved in natural resources in Guilford County and in
North Carolina. I knew them way back in the 1980s as birders, and in
1995-96 he was the founder of the Carolina Butterfly Society (CBS), of
which some of us are members. His greatest honor surely was receiving the
Order of the Long Leaf Pine from the NC Governor, in 2016, the greatest
honor a civilian in the state can receive. I was one of the founding
members of the CBS, and we led a number of field trips for butterflies and
for birds over several decades. The obituary above highlights his many
other contributions to wildlife education in North Carolina (and in South
Carolina as well).

He will be sorely missed.
