The park rangers at Huntington Beach SP and biologists with South Carolina DNR called me and has requested I do what I can to reach out to the birding community, and ask that birders not use the beach and intertidal zone behind the south jetty at the park to access views of Roseate Terns that have been observed there recently. The Least Terns are now hatching and fledging young, and many of these birds are in the intertidal zone and beach, outside of the roped off area and any walking through there disturbs the adults, the young, and foraging//feeding/loafing/resting. That is a very narrow strip of beach and intertidal zone. The Roseate Terns are typically beyond the curve of that narrow beach, so birders have to walk through the area where all the Least Terns are.. However, it is possible they can be viewed from the end of the jetty if they are roosting on the beach and exposed sand on the Murrells Inlet, so going at a higher tide may be wise if the terns leave that bar and move to the beach.
