The Harris Center is running a fourth season of counting migrating nighthawks along the shores of Powder Mill Pond in Hancock. This year, we’re aiming for coverage between Aug 20 and 31. Tonight was the biggest night of the season thus far, which saw an estimated 672 northbound nighthawks (and fewer than 100 southbound). Most birds raced north between 6-630 pm. We ended at 745 with darkening skies but still plenty of foraging nighthawks in the air.
Other notable birds were a first-year northern harrier, two merlins, a solitary sandpiper, and an unidentified peep in flight.
