Subject: [NHBirds] Pileated behavior

As I was returning from a morning paddle in my kayak, just as I reached the shoreline I heard two pileated woodpeckers squeaking at each other. They were low down on a large hemlock at the water's edge. I watched for a good five minutes, slowly drifting closer until I was less than ten feet away. They just kept hopping up and down and around and around the tree, never more than about four feet off the ground. Finally there was a brief flurry as they flew at each other, nearly hitting the beach and the front of my kayak before they took off in different directions.

Also, wondering if they were juveniles since the red crest was not as prominent as usual.
