Six local birders and a Florida visitor birded the Sierra Vista
Environmental Operations park this morning and found 71 species of birds.
The highlight of the trip was a Red-Faced Warbler, the first ever seen at
the EOP. Normally a bird of high elevation, this one decided to slum in the
mesquite of Moson Rd and surprised us all!
Another highlight was the Tropical Kingbird we spotted in the fields near
the viewing platform. It's the 4th record this summer, but it has been a
month since the last sighting - perhaps a different bird?
Other highlights:
2 Common Gallinules - one adult, one young...comparing them was fun.
Neotropical Cormorant - the continuing if irregular bird
3 Green Herons - all good looks in flight at different parts of the park.
Five species of swallows - Bank, Barn, Cliff, Tree, Rough-winged.
Marsh Wren - an early bird, they should be showing up later in the season.
And six species of warblers besides the Red-Faced: Orange-crowned, Lucy's,
MacGillivray's, Yellow, Wilson's, and Common Yellowthroat.
Walks at the Sierra Vista Environmental Operations Park are every Sunday
and start at 6 AM in August, switching to 7 AM in September. Attendance is
limited to 15 birders on a first-come first-served basis.
