One astute couple came up because they read that ‘the best day to come up
is 2 days after a cold front.” They left disappointed today but vowed a
mid-September return.
Weather:
Warmer and less windy today with prevailing winds from the NW shifting to
the W. Rain showers could be seen across the landscape from the beginning
of the day but the observatory was spared for the first three hours. I was
chased from the platform by thunder and lightning. Radar indicated popcorn
storms for the reminder of the afternoon, ending any thoughts of waiting it
out.
Raptor Observations:
The approaching thunderstorm repeated an event I witnessed a previous
August. A scattered stream of broad winged hawks rode the gust front ahead
of the thunderstorm riding a stream of air SW through the valley. The
relatively close lightning strike ended the oppprtunity to see if any more
would arrive. However the rain shield came in within 10-15 minutes.
Non-raptor Observations:
2 red crossbills were the first of the season.
3 double-crested cormorants
Predictions:
South winds tomorrow and rain on Friday. Next early count day will likely
be Saturday.
