Hancock tallied 848 tonight - just short of Rob's impressive September count.That's our second-highest tally of the season, and this puts our estimate of migrants within range of the totals from the three prior seasons we've been watching regularly on Powder Mill Pond. We're at 4,266 now.
The count has been running for thirteen nights straight now, with between two and five observers each night (only once was I solo), and we've had 100+ all but three nights. Perhaps our best night in many ways was on 8/29 as 200-300 nighthawks swarmed over the fields and the pond most of the night in front of 14 observers, including five members of the Harris Center's Young Birders Club. Eagles, merlins, a porcupine, and a brief rainbow (impressive for the drought we're in) were some of that evening's memories. It sounds like tomorrow night might be our last of the season, but there should be some more nighthawks throughout the week.

After the Merlin came back to chase pigeons some more, a Peregrine Falcon took a shot at them, marking the 10th raptor species seen here this season.
Today's favorable warm light SW winds may continue for a few days more offering the possibility of more strong movements state-wide.
