Dear friends,
If you haven't already, please sign up now for the San Diego Christmas bird count on 20 December 2025! Last year's 230 species smashed the previous record of 223 set only the previous year. Help keep our momentum going! The greater the participation, the better our results. For the results of last year's count, please see https://www.sdnhm.org/files/1317/3811/0760/San_Diego_CBC_FinalReport_2024.pdf--with lots of context for how the count illuminates the checkered history of so many species.
To sign up, please use the form at San Diego Christmas Bird Count 2025. Answers to the few questions on this form help us greatly with the count's organization, and use of this form helps us keep track of everyone in a single system. With 171 participants last year, this is no small task. While stability of the count territories and their responsible observers is important for the efficiency of the count, changes are inevitable, and we are always tinkering with ways to improve our coverage. For which we welcome your suggestions! Please address any correspondence to <cbc...> to ensure that the entire organizing committee gets the message.
If you're not familiar with the locations of San Diego County's Christmas bird count circles, please see page 12 (Figure 2) in the San Diego County Bird Atlas, available at https://sdplantatlas.org/ge_files/pdf/IntroMethods.pdf. First run by just two teams in 1922, the San Diego Christmas bird count has been a community-science event since 1953--San Diego's longest-running community-science project. The count circle has been fixed at its current position since 1963, making it immensely valuable for understanding long-tern change. Be part of it!
