Lynn and I saw Marina's catbird continuing this morning. It was in a bunch
of pepper trees and a large toyon at the NE edge of the railroad museum
area where it borders the open field to the east (34.44308, -119.85210).
There's a lot of berries in that area so hopefully it sticks around for a
bit if not harassed too much. It was vocal for a bit, too.
We also briefly saw a non-Red-breasted sapsucker which I assume is the same
one Mark Bright reported seeing with Adrian yesterday. It was in a
Pittosporum immediately east of Stow House (34.440848,-119.850187). We only
saw it briefly before it was chased off by a Red-breasted Sapsucker and I
didn't see it again during the remainder of my time there. Lynn might have
gotten a photo. I'm reporting it as 'Red-naped' for now but would love to
hear from others if they get a clearer view / photo of the bird to confirm.
There were probably at least 20 birders out there and by the time I left I
don't think anyone had yet seen a Lewis's Woodpecker, but it was very foggy
so viewing conditions were tricky. I might stop back through on my way home
since it's only about a 5 ft detour off my bike commute!
There were a decent number of warblers etc. also in the Eucalyptus around
the parking lot, the one Tipu by Stow House, and various other exotic trees
around there. I didn't have time to dig through those carefully, but folks
might keep an eye out if here to chase other stuff. In my previous visits
this month I've looked through the red gums along the east boundary of the
pond and the La Patera border of the park, but I haven't checked those in a
few days either.
Best,
Conor
