An adult male American Redstart is back for at least its fourth winter to Seaport Village, downtown. The last two years, one's best chances are around the little artificial pond next to the Malibu Farms Restaurant, but previous to that it was usually in the ficus trees in the nearby parking lot at the end of Kettner Blvd. Yesterday, I had a Hermit Warbler in Sorrento Valley, which I mention because I only average perhaps two coastal Hermits each fall, a time of year when most birds head south through the mountains. Heck, I see more individuals each fall of several eastern vagrants than I do Hermit Warblers!
Over the past few days, there have been several more Tennessee Warblers and a small slug of new Plumbeous Vireos. By my calculation, there have now been 26 Tennessee Warblers in the county during September and October, 25 near the coast and 1 in the desert. After a mere 6 Plumbeous Vireos in September, an October surge has added 20 more, several of which are returning wintering birds. Following a September with zero coastal Summer Tanagers, October has seen a slightly more respectable 10 birds found so far.
