Subject: [AZNMbirds] San Pedro House Birding Walk
Fourteen participants walked the San Pedro trails this morning and recorded 32 species. This is a low count for October and was probably due to the bit of rain we had during the walk and the muddy conditions which prevented us from accessing trails along Kingfisher Pond and the river. One of the themes of the day was flocks; we had quick looks at a flock of Lark Buntings and a flock of Yellow-headed Blackbirds and scope views of a loose flock of Lazuli Buntings that momentarily perched on the tops of mesquite trees as they moved by. The recent rains, while welcome, brought out flocks of mosquitos that seemed to follow us throughout much of the walk. The rains also caused the river to rise and fill Kingfisher and Black Phoebe Ponds which were both essentially dry prior to recent storm events.

First-of-season birds for the walk were the Yellow-headed blackbirds, a Northern Harrier and a Yellow-rumped Warbler.

The Friends of the San Pedro River lead birding walks every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month from the San Pedro House located south of Highway 90 just west of the San Pedro River. The walks last about three hours. During November the walks start at 7:00a. Bring your own binoculars, a hat and water.

The next San Pedro House birding walk will be Wednesday, November 12 at 7:00a.
