Date: 5/12/25 10:40 am From: Sarah Manning <sarah.manning...> Subject: [GABO-L] Nightjar Survey Network Reminder
Hello all,
A reminder that the National Nightjar Survey is going on now in Georgia through May 20!
The Atlantic Coast Joint Venture is spearheading an effort to get better nightjar survey coverage over the next few years in the states that border the Atlantic Ocean, to adequately document the population status and trends of the Chuck-will's-widow, Eastern whip-poor-will, and Common Nighthawk. This effort is part of the national Nightjar Survey Network.
In Georgia, the USGS BBS Lab, GADNR Wildlife Resources Division, and Birds Georgia are assisting with this effort. Each nightjar route will have 10 stops at 1-mile intervals. Each route will be run one time at night from May through July depending on moon phase and certain weather conditions (e.g., clear sky, visible moon). Survey procedures are outlined on the Nightjar Survey Network website (http://www.nightjars.org/).
The GA nightjar routes are now available on Nightjars.org <http://nightjars.org/>. You'll have to make a NatureCounts account and wait for approval from the admin (usually takes a day or two). Then, you'll be able to see which routes in Georgia are available.
Another survey window will open in June and July during high moon illumination (June 2 - 18 and July 2 - 17). You must make an account on nightjars.org to see and claim available routes.
Thank you! Please email me if you have any questions.

Dear Georgia birders, especially in the Columbus area,
I'm trying to reach Walter Calhoun to ask his permission to use his superb owl photo in the winter 24-25 "From the Field" column in *The Oriole*. Walter, if you see this, please contact me at <mhodges1957...>, and if someone has his email, please forward this to him.

He may still go. If you didn't go there where would you go to catch up with
the birds that are migrating?

Hi John,
We had a group field trip this past weekend with Birds Georgia. Not a super high species count but we did get some awesome warblers and thrushes. Unfortunately we were under pressure from severe weather coming in (which also probably affected how many birds we saw) so we couldn't explore as thoroughly as we wanted. Here's my checklist from that day: https://ebird.org/checklist/S232466261
There should still be plenty of migrants up there this week! It's worth it just for the incredible views anyway. We made it to the top of the mountain road and heard plenty of birds throughout the walk. I strongly recommend going early in the morning as that's when the birds are usually the most active. I'm sure he'd come across other birders on the weekend but I don't personally know of any organized trips. Good luck to him!

I have a friend who started birding this year. He is hoping to go to Kennesaw Mtn later this week.
1. Is this still a good time to go or has the migration passed on from there? 2. If he goes, where exactly is the best place to see birds, especially warblers? 3. I assume morning, but will there be other birders there? I think he would like to tag along with some folks who know what they are doing.

I was fortunate a couple of weeks ago to have a male painted bunting at my feeder for a day. And each day for the past couple of weeks I’ve had a male blue grosbeak at the fillet. This is weird - he just flew in for dinner! He’s so pretty. Hope I get a rose-breasted grosbeak soon.

I have noticed a rapid increase of migrants over the past two days. Yesterday Merlin "ID" Cape May Warbler singing in the yard; never did find (a bird I cannot hear). Today Merlin had Cape May. Cedar Waxwing, and Bay-breast. Did find a Cape May this time and a pair of Cedar Waxwings, but could not find a Bay-breasted Warbler. The front may push birds this way and have them sit down. Good time to get out. Jim McDermott, Cherokee

Date: 4/16/25 5:28 am From: Melanie Vickers <melanievickers11...> Subject: [GABO-L] Injured Sandhill crane in Rabun
There is a lone Sandhill crane in Rabun County that is missing much of its
left leg and foot. I’ve contacted a few rehabbers with no luck. Any
suggestions as to how to help this bird? He is foraging in the field and
I’ve seen it fly short distances.
I’ve posted photo of it in eBird.
